What is the typical service life of LED linear lights?

Nov 27, 2024

LED linear lights are one of the most widely used lighting fixtures. They are slender in shape, like a flexible light strip, and can outline simple and smooth lines in space. In terms of materials, they are mostly made of high-quality aluminum alloy or PC, which not only ensures the durability of the lamps, but also has good heat dissipation performance. What is the service life of LED linear lights?

Ideal service life

Under ideal conditions, the life of the LED chip itself is very long. The service life of high-quality LED chips can reach 50,000-100,000 hours. However, in real life, the service life of LED linear lights is affected by many factors.

Actual service life and influencing factors

1. Heat dissipation

  • LED linear lights generate heat during operation. If the heat dissipation is not good, the temperature of the LED chip will be too high. Generally speaking, when the temperature of the LED chip increases by 10℃, its life will be shortened by about 50%. Therefore, if the heat dissipation design of the lamp is unreasonable, the heat cannot be dissipated in time, and the chip works in a high temperature environment for a long time, its actual service life may be reduced to 20,000-30,000 hours or even lower.
  • In order to ensure good heat dissipation, many LED linear lights use metal heat sinks, such as aluminum alloy shells, to transfer heat from the chip to the shell through heat conduction, and then dissipate heat into the air through natural convection or forced convection (such as installing a cooling fan).

2. Driver power quality

  • The driver power supply is a key component that provides stable current and voltage for LED linear lights. If the driver power supply is of poor quality, the output current or voltage is unstable, which will damage the LED chip. Overvoltage may cause the junction temperature of the LED chip to rise and accelerate chip aging. Overcurrent may directly damage the chip.
  • A high-quality driver can ensure that the LED linear lamp operates at normal working current and voltage, so that the service life of the lamp can be close to the theoretical life of the chip itself. Generally, a reliable driver can make the service life of the LED linear lamp reach 30,000-50,000 hours.

3. Use environment

  • Ambient temperature and humidity also have an important impact on the life of LED linear lamps. In a high temperature and high humidity environment, the electronic components inside the lamp are easily affected by moisture, resulting in short circuit or corrosion, thereby shortening the life of the lamp. For example, in some humid environments in the south, if the lamp does not have good waterproof and moisture-proof measures, its service life may be greatly reduced.
  • In addition, dust, corrosive gases, etc. in the environment where the lamp is used will also damage the lamp. Dust accumulates on the surface or inside of the lamp, which will affect the heat dissipation effect; corrosive gases (such as sulfur dioxide, chlorine, etc.) may corrode the outer shell and internal components of the lamp, reducing the service life of the lamp.
